Why do Canadians buy milk in bags instead of cartons or bottles?

In some parts of Canada, milk is sold in plastic bags. At home, one bag is placed inside a special milk pitcher with a handle, and a small cut is made in one corner that sticks out of the pitcher. There is no carton to open and no bottle cap to twist. The milk is poured straight from the bag standing inside the pitcher. In Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes, it is a familiar sight in the kitchen.
