Free public transport has been in effect nationwide since March 2020, and it is also used by cross-border commuters from France, Belgium, Germany, and elsewhere, as well as by visitors. At stops and platforms, what you notice first is not payment or ticket gates, but people getting straight on and finding a place.
At a bus door, a tram stop, or a train platform, there is no ticket check to pass through before the journey begins.
